Nuestra Unidad forma parte del Instituto de Ciencias del Mar y Limnología (ICML) de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). Estamos localizados en la costa Este del Estado de Quintana Roo, en Puerto Morelos. Este pequeño pueblo de pescadores está rodeado y protegido por un sistema arrecifal típico Caribeño compuesto de sistemas eco-sedimentarios de coral, pastos marinos y manglares.
Nuestra misión es estudiar aspectos de este sistema, incluyendo la vida de organismos que lo habitan, las relaciones entre ellos, la estructura que producen colectivamente, y los ambientes costeros y oceánicos que sobre ellos influyen.
La escala a la que estudiamos estos componentes varía enormemente tanto en espacio como en tiempo. No solo estudiamos procesos moleculares que ocurren en cuestión de segundos dentro de las células de organismos arrecifales, sino que abarcamos todas las vías hasta conocer como los arrecifes crecen y se desarrollan a lo largo de miles de años.

Welcome
Our Unit forms part of the Institute of Marine Sciences and Limnology (ICML) of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). We are located in Puerto Morelos, along the east coast of the state of Quintana Roo. This small fishing village is enclosed and protected by a typical Caribbean reef system composed of coral, seagrass and mangrove eco-sedimentary systems.
Our mission is to investigate various parts of this reef system, including the lives of the diverse plants and animals that inhabit it, their interrelations, the physical structure they collectively produce, and the coastal and oceanic environments that they influence and protect.
The scale at which we study these different components varies enormously in both space and time. We not only investigate split-second molecular processes which control the cells of its inhabitants, but range all the way up to how the system grew and developed over thousands of years.
